'Puss In Boots' Stomps On Box-Office Competition

'Paranormal Activity 3' was #2 at the weekend box office, while Johnny Depp's 'Rum Diary' bombed.

"Puss in Boots" was the #1 movie over the typically soft weekend before Halloween, though it posted the lowest debut for a DreamWorks Animation movie since 2006's "Flushed Away." The 3-D "Shrek" spinoff, featuring the voice of Antonio Banderas in the title role, took in $34 million according to studio estimates. DreamWorks' similarly budgeted "Megamind" opened with $46 million last year. To be fair, "Puss" had to do battle with the World Series and East Coast snowstorms in addition to Halloween celebrations.

Johnny Depp's very personal "The Rum Diary," which he produced and starred in, was a bomb with just $5 million. Despite a Vanity Fair cover story, a Larry King interview and a slew of other press from the A-list star, Depp's adaptation of the late Hunter S. Thompson's semi-autobiographical novel failed to generate much heat. At press time it sat with a "rotten" 50 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

"The Rum Diary is a woozy mess that should never have made it to theaters. But then, it stars Johnny Depp, so it did," wrote Tom Long of The Detroit News.

Depp discovered the unpublished "Rum Diary" manuscript while staying with Thompson, whom he befriended during the making of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," which opened with $3.3 million and similarly mixed reviews in 1998.

Justin Timberlake's "In Time" was the other new wide release over the weekend. It opened at #3 on the box-office scorecard with an underwhelming $12 million, which is much less than Timberlake's "Friends With Benefits" and even co-star Amanda Seyfried's "Red Riding Hood."

The rest of the weekend's top five included last week's #1 movie, "Paranormal Activity 3," at #2 with $18.5 million for a $81.3 million total, and "Footloose" at #4 with $5.4 million for a $38.4 million total.

Next weekend's new releases include "A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas" and "Tower Heist," which features an ensemble cast led by Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy.

Check out everything we've got on "Puss in Boots" and "Paranormal Activity 3."

'Harry Potter' DVDs Returning Late 2012, Early 2013

When I suggested that another "Harry Potter" complete DVD boxed set was on its way in the next year or so, I wasn't very far off. Warner Bros might be making a big deal of the fact that "Harry Potter" DVDs are being taken off shelves starting December 29, but they won't be gone forever. [...]

Michael Jackson Trial Put On Hold Until Wednesday

Judge suspends trial of Dr. Conrad Murray due to a death in key witness' family.
By Gil Kaufman

After taking the day off Friday just as the prosecution was preparing to wrap up its case, the involuntary manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson's physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, is on hold due to the death of the father of the prosecution's final witness.

According to CNN, the Los Angeles Court public information office sent out a notice Sunday explaining that details on the resumption of the trial will be sent out "when further information is available." After two weeks of evidence attempting to portray Murray as negligent and reckless in his care for Jackson, the prosecution was close to wrapping up its part of the case when testimony was suspended Friday to allow final witness Dr. Steven Shafer to travel to a previously scheduled anesthesiology conference in Chicago.

But, en route to the conference, Shafer learned that his father had died, and he never made it to the event. Shafer, described as a highly respected anesthesiologist and pharmacologist, was expected to testify about the effects of the surgical anesthetic propofol on the human body. Jackson died as a result of propofol intoxication, and the case against Murray hinges on the prosecution's theory that the cardiologist gave the pop icon a lethal dose of the drug and then provided substandard care when Jackson went into cardiac arrest as a result.

The Associated Press reported that the trial will resume Wednesday, after the judge in the case agreed to give the defense more time to prepare their response to tests the coroner's office conducted last week on the level of the sedative lorazepam in Jackson's system.

Shafer is also expected to give a key piece of evidence to counter the defense's claim that Jackson self-administered the fatal 25mg dose of propofol through an IV catheter in his leg.

After pursuing a strategy in which the defense intended to portray Jackson as having taken the deadly dose of propofol by himself when Murray was out of the room, the doctor's legal team pivoted last week and appeared set on focusing on an allegedly self-administered overdose of lorazepam instead.

Once Shafer gives his testimony, the defense will present its case and call an estimated 15 witnesses, which could take the testimony through Friday or next Monday.

ASOS Made in England AW11

ASOS_Made in England_Feature Button

In recent seasons commentators and brands alike have taken a keen interest in how and where their clothes are made. There have been numerous labels launched on the 'Made in...' wave of public intrigue and enthusiasm and I for one, welcome it. However, one launch seemingly passed me by..until now. For AW11, ASOS' Made in England footwear range is in its third full season. It was unveiled back in August and I was able to see just how the offering has evolved, talk to the craftsmen behind the range and order my own pair.

The 'Made in England' collection sees the ASOS footwear designers team up with one of the country's oldest and more special shoe manufacturers, NPS Shoes Ltd. Founded in 1881, at the height of the industrial revolution, as one of the world's original footwear manufacturers, NPS was formed as a workers cooperative, Northamptonshire Productive Society, and was the oldest of its type in the UK up until 2006. Although no longer a cooperative the employees and craftsmen maintain the original skills and ethics dating back over one hundred and twenty five years. Based in Wellingborough, NPS shoes are known for their goodyear welt technology and use it in all their shoe production. This particular technique is needed to fix their famed Solovair sole onto soft sole suspension boots and shoes. The name might not feel that familiar on first reading but I'm quite sure that you've seen or indeed worn their work without even knowing it. As I was talked through the capsule range for ASOS I was informed about the relationship with Dr. Marten's. To cut a long and complicated story short, shoe manufacturer R. Griggs Group Ltd. had the patent to produce Dr. Marten boots but not the technology so in 1960 Griggs and NPS collaborated to create a boot using the Solovair sole and a Griggs boot, the result was the now iconic Dr. Marten boot. Today their range consists of a number of collections including heritage, country and solovair but it is great to see ASOS open them up to a new audience.

The range for ASOS consists of hiking boots, derby shoes, two tone leather brogues, eight hole lace up flat shoes, chukkas and ankle boots. All feel decidedly British and showcase fine great British craftsmanship in addition to covetable design. On the launch night, a number of invited guests (myself included) were able to create their own made to measure pair of either chukkas or derbys. In addition to having a hand in the design of the choice it afforded the opportunity to learn a little more about NPS shoes...

IMG_6506
First things first... my feet were measured. Apparently I am a perfect 10.
IMG_6523
The assortment of leathers, suedes, welting and micro soles I could choose from.

IMG_6517
Having made my choice of the chukka boots these Autumnal hues were my spectrum of options.

IMG_6513
My choice. Chukka boots in a combination of wonderfully named rust and snuff with a natural welt and micro brown sole.

It was a great experience and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire process. Extremely happy with my choice made on that late August evening, all I had to do was wait for NPS and ASOS to realise my order. Five weeks later and just as real Autumn weather sets in my chukkas arrived...

IMG_7097
A lovely addition to my ever growing shoe collection. These will certainly pound the pavements this season and beyond.

For me, when it comes to manufacturing today the real onus should be on quality. Of course the slogans of 'British is best' are catchy but it just isn't true for everything. For me, we should not be interested in making something in this country simply for the sake of it or for branding. Simply put certain places or countries excel at different things. However, when it comes to shoes few places are better than Northampton and it is great to see a brand like ASOS support this tradition. I'm so pleased to see and fortunate enough to wear the fruits of this collaboration. Long may it continue.

Do Foo Fighters Know Robert Pattinson From Robert Plant?

During band's rehearsal break for Sunday's Movie Awards, we put Foos to the test.
By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Jim Cantiello

The Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl

UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Hard rock, heavy metal, hardcore and punk have long gone hand-in-hand with evil wizards, magic, vampires and werewolves. And with a collective sub-cultural pedigree that includes stints in the Germs, No Use for a Name, Sunny Day Real Estate, Scream and some band called Nirvana, you'd think the Foo Fighters — set to perform at Sunday's Movie Awards — would know their "Potter" from their Zeppelin. Certainly they can recognize a "wand" reference and pinpoint its origin?

Right? Before we put MTV News' magically crafted trivia to the band, it seemed safe to assume the Foos would accurately distinguish between the words of Harry Potter, a "Twilight" character and Led Zeppelin. But was their underground nerd cred blown to shreds? Read on — and click the video! — to see how the Foo Fighters fared when we caught up with them on the Universal Studios lot, shortly after they finished rehearsing their Movie Awards performance.

Our own Jim Cantiello played dungeon master as Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear were given a series of semi-famous lines and asked whether they originated with "Harry Potter," the "Twilight Saga" or the lyrics of hard-rock pioneers Led Zeppelin.

Here's a sampling of a few of those one-liners:

» "The elder wand, the most powerful wand ever made."

» "Why don't you let me be yours ever truly? Can I make your garden grow?"

» "You're lying, Dolores! You mustn't tell lies!"

Can you guess whether the lines above came from the "Potter" flicks, "Twilight" or Robert Plant?

Watch as the Foos try their best to do exactly that. Then tune in to the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday to catch the Foo Fighters rock the stage with their new single, "Walk."

Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards? Find out June 5, when the 20th annual show airs live at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Tune in at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT that night for the "America's Best Dance Crew" finale and Movie Awards pre-show, loaded with live action from the red carpet, exclusive movie clips and a special edition of "After Hours."

R.E.M. Enlist Kirsten Dunst For Video

Actress stars in clip for band's final single, 'We All Go Back to Where We Belong.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Kirsten Dunst in R.E.M.'s video for "We All Go Back To Where We Belong"
Photo: Warner Bros.

R.E.M.'s two videos for "We All Go Back to Where We Belong" are quiet and simple. The black-and-white clips were directed by Michael Stipe and Dominic DeJoseph; one features "Melancholia" actress Kirsten Dunst and the other, poet/artist/activist John Giorno.

Dunst's version plays like a Warhol Factory screen test. She stands in a simple flower-print dress in front of a white wall as her expression changes from happy to sad, mimicking the melancholy and longing of the track. The second version is similar, but Giorno's expression changes less frequently. In fact, he looks pretty emotionless for much of the clip, only cracking a smile on occasion.

In a statement on their website, Stipe says the videos have "gravity and beauty." He continued, "To be able to work with John and Kirsten was a dream I carried since we recorded the song, and their participation completes the song for me."

The band's final album, Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, is out November 15. This song serves as the band's last single. It's one of three new tracks on the album, which also features songs spanning their 30-year history. Some tracks that made the final cut include "Everybody Hurts," "Electrolite," "Nightswimming" and "Imitation of Life," to name a few.

R.E.M. announced their split in late September on their website, prompting fans to mourn the loss of the iconic trio. "To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band," their statement read. "We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."

What do you think of the R.E.M. videos? Tell us in the comments!

Michael Jackson Doctor's Decision A 'Recipe For Disaster'

During Conrad Murray's involuntary manslaughter trial, sleep expert criticizes decision to give pop star propofol and two other sedatives.
By Gil Kaufman

Dr. Steven Shafer
Photo: Pool/ Getty Images

It was another day of harsh criticism in the involuntary manslaughter case against doctor Conrad Murray on Thursday (October 13). After nearly two weeks of the prosecution attempting to paint cardiologist Murray as a negligent, sloppy physician who did not take the proper precautions in safeguarding the health of the 50-year-old pop icon, the final two witnesses took the stand to wrap up the state's case.

Day 13
The Witnesses
» Dr. Nader Kamangar, sleep expert
» Dr. Steven Shafer, propofol expert

Testimony highlights
» UCLA sleep expert Kamangar told the court that Jackson appeared to suffer from insomnia caused by anxiety about performing and a possible drug problem that Murray should have evaluated before he began treating the singer with the powerful surgical anesthetic propofol, according to the Los Angeles Times. He referred to Murray's decision to give Jackson propofol and two other sedatives on the morning of June 25, 2009, a "recipe for disaster."

» A defense attorney asked whether some of the decisions Kamangar called "extreme deviations" from standard care could have directly caused Jackson's death. "The fact that he didn't write down his [Jackson's] vital signs ... that didn't kill Michael Jackson did it?" lawyer Michael Flanagan asked. "The failure to chart was not a cause of death, was it?" Kamangar replied that the charting itself was not, but that keeping proper records of how much and which kinds of medicine Jackson had received, as well as his level of hydration and blood pressure, were all crucial bits of data that were missing. "It's one of many factors," he concluded.

» In abbreviated testimony, leading propofol expert Shafer said he was hired 20 years ago by the company that makes the drug to help them figure out the correct dosages for the anesthetic.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to the charge of involuntary manslaughter. He faces four years in prison and the loss of his medical license. The prosecution was close to finishing the presentation of its case before the judge unexpectedly called for a weekend recess Thursday afternoon due to a scheduling conflict. The final prosecution witness will continue his testimony Monday before the defense begins calling its witnesses.

After suggesting in opening statements that they would argue that Jackson either swallowed or somehow dosed himself with propofol, Murray's defense team pivoted away from that tactic Wednesday when it became clear from expert testimony that it was not a viable line of defense.

'Once Upon A Time' Preview: Fairy Tales Meet Reality

ABC fantasy series from 'Lost' writers/producers follows the lives of storybook characters forced to live in the real world.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

The characters in the fairy tales you grew up listening to are people too. That's a big part of the story behind ABC's upcoming fantasy series "Once Upon a Time." From the minds of former "Lost" writers and producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, "Once Upon a Time" follows the lives of a number of storybook characters who find themselves trapped in the real world after a curse is placed on them.

Jennifer Morrison ("Warrior") stars as Emma Swan, the woman tasked with saving the fairy-tale world and bringing back the happy endings. Morrison says that there's much more to the series than the familiar faces, like Snow White, and that the show is about something bigger and much more relatable.

"It's relationship driven. There is this sort of underlying universal thing," Morrison said. "We're in a time in our lives where the economy's kind of tough and jobs are tough, a lot of struggles people are facing. In a sense, our show really represents that in the curse that is on the characters and the hope that there is a way out, that you can band together and find a way out."

Taking such a fantastical premise and making it about something real is a trick Horowitz and Kitsis say they learned from their time working on another sweeping fantasy epic, "Lost." The creators cite the character-driven drama of "Lost" and that show's executive producers, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, for giving them the direction and recipe for a successful outlandish drama series.

"I think that the important thing that Damon and Carlton always told us was that it's about character first, although the fairy tale is fun, and Storybrooke's fun," Kitsis says. "Like, oh my god, that's Grumpy in a scene with Little Red Riding Hood. If you don't care about the characters and you don't care about their struggles, for us it's important that they're not just animated characters."

For any TV show with even the most tenuous connections to "Lost," there will be questions of whether there is an overall arch already planned. Horowitz and Kitsis say they know where they want to take it but are waiting to see how viewers react first. "You can really only take those big picture ideas and then look at what's right in front of you and try to tell the best story you can, and we'll see what the audience says," Horowitz explained.

To clarify further, Kitsis offered up an analogy. "It's kind of like we're on a road trip. We know we want to get to New York eventually, but if we see a large potato in Idaho we have to go see, then we're going to veer off and see it," Kitsis says.

"Once Upon a Time" premieres this Sunday on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. CT.

Pet Tags

Man, I'm so irritated.

I just received four pets tags that I ordered for Bev and Mary Margaret (two for Brooklyn and two for LA) and they're all messed up. Not only did they leave off the "Margaret" on Mary Margaret's tags, but the text isn't centered correctly and runs off the right side on all four of them. (The last letter of the address is cut in half.) The tags themselves are also ugly. The edges aren't smoothed out... they look like someone just cut them from a piece of sheet metal and called it a day.

So anyway, I got them this morning on my way to Starbucks (yesterday's mail), so while I was there, I started drafting a strongly-worded letter in my head, like what I was going to say to these people when I sent them back.

And then I saw it.

In tiny print on the bottom of the invoice it said, "Our handicapped employees appreciate your order."

So now I can't send them back. If I did I'd be a total asshole.

I'm just going to order new ones from someplace else. Any recommendations?

Eddie Murphy, Brett Ratner Can't Agree On 'Beverly Hills Cop 4'

There seems to be two varying opinions on whether "Beverly Hill Cop 4" will ever happen. Ask the attached director, Brett Ratner, and he'll tell you he wants to make it happen with Eddie Murphy. But the response is ... rather different if you put the same question to the A-list actor.

MTV News recently caught up with Ratner as he promoted "Tower Heist," out this Friday and starring yes, Murphy. The director sounded hopeful about another "Cop" sequel.

"I think one day, I'm hoping, because it is one of the most iconic characters ever," Ratner told us. "Eddie does not go anywhere in the world where they're not like, 'Axel Foley, what's up?' more than 'Eddie Murphy.' It is something that our hope and desire is to get it made."

Much like he did with MTV News, Ratner has spoken on several occasions about his hopes for a fourth movie featuring the legendary Axel Foley, a Detroit cop who finds himself solving crimes in the very posh Beverly Hills.

In the latest issue of Rolling Stone, however, Eddie Murphy tells the magazine that the possibilities for a fourth "Beverly Hills Cop" film are dead.

"They're not doing it," Murphy told the magazine. According to the actor, the proposed screenplays didn't really support the making of a new film. "None of the movie scripts were right; it was trying to force the premise. If you have to force something, you shouldn't be doing it. It was always a rehash of the old thing. It was always wrong," Murphy says.

But Murphy has other ideas for the beloved character. "What I'm trying to do now is produce a TV show starring Axel Foley's son, and Axel is the chief of police now in Detroit," Murphy revealed. "I'd do the pilot, show up here and there."

Ratner himself acknowledged the challenges involved with revisiting the "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise. "It's a hard nut to crack, especially since there are three that exist before that. It's a hard thing," Ratner admitted, before adding that the three films allow him to see what worked in the series and what didn't.
